Careful weaving of theology, worship, biblical study and praxis will again be the focus as Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary hosts the second Rooted and Grounded conference, October 1-3, 2015, on the campus in Elkhart, Ind.
The event, focusing on land and Christian discipleship, is designed to bring together scholars, students and teachers along with people engaged with the land, such as farmers, naturalists and restorers.
The planning committee has issued a call for proposals for papers and workshops, with suggested themes of watershed discipleship, land and place, eschatology and care for the land, place and contemporary life, and race and land. Planners are hoping for a balance of scholarly exploration of issues as well as practical approaches to care for the land. Proposals are due by July 1 with selections announced by July 15. Details are available at www.ambs.edu/news-events/documents/Rooted-and-Grounded-call-for-papers-2015.pdf.
Three keynote speakers for the conference have been announced:
• Wilma Bailey, Professor Emerita of Christian Witness and of Hebrew Bible and Aramaic Scripture, Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, Ind.;
• Sylvia Keesmaat, adjunct professor, author of Colossians Remixed: Subverting the Empire (with Brian Walsh, 2004), and an organic farmer;
• Ched Myers, activist theologian, biblical scholar, popular educator, leading voice in watershed discipleship.
The three days also will feature presentations, workshops, worship and time for learning from and with others. An afternoon of immersion experiences will allow participants to visit one or two of a wide variety of conservation and restoration efforts in the area.
Visit www.ambs.edu/rootedandgrounded for further information. Registration will open at that address in mid-July.
The first Rooted and Grounded conference in September 2014 brought together 170 people from diverse settings. Participants in that event reported special appreciation for the strong emphasis on biblical foundations for creation care and worship experiences that reflected this priority.
